Scholarship identification and application is included as standard in every Vertex engagement. The majority of Indian families do not apply for scholarships they are fully eligible for, not because the awards do not exist, but because no one told them about them. We do.
Major Scholarships
The following represent the most significant awards available to Indian students across UK, US, Canadian and Australian programmes. Many carry full funding covering tuition, accommodation, flights and living expenses.
The UK Government’s global flagship scholarship for future leaders. Covers tuition, living allowance, return economy flights and travel grants for one year of Masters study. The selection process is rigorous and reputationally significant, Chevening alumni networks in India and globally are powerful. We have guided multiple students through the full Chevening application process at Vertex.
2+ years work experience required · UK Masters programme · Indian nationals
Covers the full cost of any postgraduate degree at the University of Cambridge for students of outstanding intellectual ability and commitment to improving the lives of others. Approximately 80 scholarships are awarded annually worldwide. Among the most competitive scholarships in existence, and among the most genuinely transformative for recipients. For Vertex students applying to Cambridge postgraduate programmes, we always assess Gates eligibility.
Postgraduate at Cambridge · Exceptional academic and leadership track record · Non-UK nationals
Funded by the UK Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office for students from Commonwealth nations including India. Awards cover tuition, living expenses, return airfare and thesis allowance. Less well-known than Chevening but of equal prestige and marginally less competitive in certain disciplines. A significant and actively underused opportunity for eligible Indian postgraduate students.
Indian nationals · UK Masters or PhD · FCDO selection criteria
Competitive merit scholarship for high-achieving international undergraduates at University College London. Covers partial tuition fees and is awarded entirely on academic merit. Among the most valuable university-specific undergraduate scholarships available at a Russell Group institution. Vertex manages the UCL scholarship application for every eligible student applying to UCL through our programme.
International undergraduate applicants · Strong predicted grades · Any discipline at UCL
Merit-based award for outstanding international students from India across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes at the University of Edinburgh. International undergraduate applicants · Outstanding academic record across all disciplines
Managed by the British Council in partnership with participating UK universities, the GREAT Scholarships programme provides at least £10,000 toward postgraduate tuition fees for Indian students. Multiple universities participate across disciplines ranging from engineering to arts. A frequently overlooked award that we actively identify and apply for on behalf of every eligible Vertex student.
Indian nationals · Postgraduate study · Participating UK universities only

Real Costs
The two questions every Indian family asks us: what will it cost in total, and will my child be able to work after they graduate? Here are the honest answers, by country.
| Country | Annual Tuition | Annual Living Costs | Post-Study Work Visa | Average Graduate Starting Salary |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| United Kingdom | £15,000–£38,000 | £10,000–£18,000 (London significantly higher) | Graduate Route: 2 years (3 for PhD) | £28,000–£40,000 starting |
| United States | USD 30,000–USD 60,000 | USD 15,000–USD 25,000 | OPT: 1 year • STEM OPT: +2 years | USD 55,000–USD 100,000+ |
| Canada | CAD 20,000–CAD 45,000 | CAD 12,000–CAD 18,000 | PGWP: up to 3 years | CAD 45,000–CAD 65,000 |
| Australia | AUD 25,000–AUD 45,000 | AUD 15,000–AUD 22,000 | Temporary Graduate Visa: 2–4 years | AUD 55,000–AUD 75,000 |
| Netherlands | €8,000–€18,000 | €9,000–€14,000 | Orientation Year: 1 year | €35,000–€50,000 |
| Germany (English-taught) | €1,000–€5,000 (mostly fees only) | €8,000–€12,000 | Job Seeker Visa: 18 months | €35,000–50,000 |
Students on a UK Student Visa may work up to 20 hours per week during term time and unlimited hours during vacations. In a city like London or Edinburgh, 15–18 hours of work per week at minimum wage generates £150–£180 weekly, covering a meaningful proportion of living expenses. In Canada and Australia, equivalent work rights apply. In the USA, on-campus work is permitted up to 20 hours/week on an F-1 visa.
The families who feel most confident about the cost of international education are those who view it as a long-term investment with a quantifiable return rather than as a short-term expense. A student who completes a degree at LSE or Edinburgh and enters finance, law or technology in London will typically recover the full cost of their education within three to four years of working. The more useful question for most families is not "can we afford this?" but "what is the opportunity cost of the alternative?"
Post-Study Work Rights
Allows international graduates to live and work anywhere in the UK for 2 years (3 for PhD) without a job offer requirement. No employer sponsorship required. Many Vertex alumni have used this visa to begin careers in London before transitioning to long-term sponsored positions.
F-1 graduates may work for 12 months on OPT. STEM graduates can apply for a 24-month extension, giving 3 years total US work authorisation. After OPT, most Indian graduates pursue H-1B employer sponsorship in technology, finance or consulting.
Canada’s PGWP is among the most generous post-study work arrangements globally, up to 3 years of open work authorisation. Combined with Express Entry, Canada offers one of the clearest PR pathways for Indian graduates with professional experience.
The subclass 485 visa allows graduates to live and work in Australia for 2–4 years, with longer stays available for graduates from regional areas. Australia’s points-based immigration system provides structured PR pathways for skilled professionals across engineering, healthcare, technology and finance.
Beyond the Well-Known Names
The conversation around funding for Indian students going abroad is dominated by two or three well-known names. The actual landscape is substantially broader and better for ambitious students than most families realise.
Oxford + Full Funding
One of Oxford's most prestigious awards for international students from developing economies including India. Covers full tuition fees, a living allowance, return flights, and an induction programme in the UK. Awarded to postgraduate students who demonstrate leadership potential and a commitment to contributing to their home country. Vertex works with eligible students from early in the application cycle to build the leadership narrative this scholarship requires.
Oxford + Full Funding
Over 150 scholarships per year for graduate students across all disciplines at Oxford. Covers full course fees and a generous living allowance. Academically exceptional Indian students applying to Oxford postgraduate programmes are automatically considered. Vertex works with students to ensure the application presents their academic achievements in the way Clarendon selectors respond to.
US universities divide into two categories when it comes to financial aid for international students. Understanding the distinction is the first step to unlocking funding.
Need-Blind Institutions: A small number of elite universities, including Harvard, MIT, Yale, Princeton, Amherst, and Dartmouth, admit international students without considering ability to pay and then meet 100% of demonstrated financial need. For an Indian family that qualifies, the net cost of attending Harvard can be lower than a private Indian college. Vertex has worked with students from middle-income families who accessed this funding route.
Merit Scholarships at Need-Aware Institutions: Most US universities consider financial need in their admissions decision for international students, but this does not mean funding is unavailable. Presidential Scholarships at institutions like Tulane, University of Rochester, Case Western, and Vanderbilt can cover 50 to 100% of fees for academically exceptional students. What sets Vertex students apart in these applications is not just the academic record but how the full application package is constructed.
Vertex identifies and applies for every scholarship a student qualifies for as a standard part of our programme.
