The decision to send a child to boarding school is one of the most significant a family makes. Vertex Global provides expert, unbiased guidance on boarding school placements across the United Kingdom and India, including A-Level and IB pathway options at both.
A residential school education is categorically different from day schooling. The combination of academic rigour, structured co-curricular life, independence, and peer networks produces a kind of confidence and capability that day school students, however excellent, rarely develop at the same pace. Whether in the UK or India, the boarding schools we recommend share one quality: they demand the full, genuine engagement of every student who enters them.
Book Free CallWhy Boarding School Matters
The environment, not just the teaching, is what distinguishes a boarding education. When students live where they learn, something different happens.
A boarding student who manages their own time, navigates conflict with peers, and makes decisions without parental intervention every hour of the day develops a practical independence that university admissions offices, and, more importantly, future employers, recognise immediately. Students who arrive at Oxford or LSE from boarding school are almost always better prepared for the unstructured demands of undergraduate life.
The friendships formed in boarding schools are among the most durable a person makes. They are formed under genuine pressure, late-night project deadlines, shared sports victories, disagreements in shared spaces, and the resulting network often proves more professionally valuable than the degree that follows. In the UK, the boarding school alumni network is particularly powerful across law, finance, media and government.
Good boarding schools prepare students for university as an explicit goal, not an afterthought. Subject depth, personal statement support, entrance exam coaching for LNAT, UCAT or Oxbridge admissions tests, these are woven into the curriculum at strong boarding schools rather than added on. A student leaving a quality boarding school at 18 has, in many cases, received more targeted university preparation than most Indian day school students who work with a consultancy for the first time in Class 12.
British boarding schools for Indian students: types, costs, entry requirements and A-Levels
UK Boarding Schools
The British boarding school system is one of the most established and globally respected in the world. For Indian families, it is also genuinely complex to navigate, different entry points, qualification types, scholarship structures, and selective intake processes all require expert guidance.
The most traditional UK boarding entry point. Students sit Common Entrance, examined in English, Mathematics, Science, French and other subjects, typically at the end of their equivalent Class 7 in India. Preparation requires 12–18 months and specialised tutoring in the UK exam format. Results determine entry to specific senior schools.
The most common UK boarding entry point for Indian students. Students join the two-year sixth form at 16 (Class 11 equivalent) to study A-Levels or IB. Entry requirements typically include strong Class 10 ICSE or CBSE results, an interview, and sometimes a school-set examination. Many sixth forms admit a significant proportion of their students at this stage.
Students who complete Class 12 in India but miss direct entry thresholds can enter UK universities through a Foundation Year, a one-year bridging programme that earns direct entry to Year 1. This is not a boarding school route but a university-run pathway. Vertex advises on both.
“The students we place in boarding schools arrive at university three years later with an application essay that writes itself.”

Cambridge International and IB qualifications are available in India, not just in the UK
Important Clarification
A common misconception among Indian families is that A-Level and IB education requires travelling to the UK or internationally. Both Cambridge International A-Levels (CIE) and the IB Diploma are offered at a significant and growing number of schools across India. This is one of the most important facts we share with families considering international pathways.
Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) administers Cambridge AS & A-Levels at accredited schools across India. These qualifications are identical in syllabus and assessment to the A-Levels taken in the UK, and are treated identically by UK universities. Centres offering CIE A-Levels can be found in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Pune and other major cities.
For Indian families who want the international qualification advantage without the cost of UK boarding, CIE A-Levels in India offer a genuinely competitive pathway to UK, US and Australian universities at a fraction of the cost.
The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) is available at authorised IB World Schools across India. The IBDP requires students to study six subjects across multiple disciplines, write a 4,000-word Extended Essay, complete a Theory of Knowledge course, and fulfil CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) requirements. This breadth is precisely what UK, US and Canadian universities value most.
IB Diploma graduates from strong Indian schools have been admitted to Oxford, Cambridge, LSE, Cornell and University of Toronto through Vertex programmes. The qualification is not a disadvantage, in many contexts, it is an advantage.
The choice between CBSE, ISC, CIE A-Levels and IB is not straightforward and should not be made on trend or peer pressure. Each qualification has a different workload, a different strength in different university markets, and suits different types of learners. At Vertex, we spend significant time with Class 9 and 10 families on this exact question, before the choice becomes irreversible.
Elite Indian residential schools, and why they are a serious option
India Boarding Schools
India has some of the most genuinely distinguished boarding schools in the world. Many of our families initially assume that UK boarding is automatically superior, but the reality is more nuanced. The right residential school for a specific child may well be in the Doon Valley or the Nilgiris, not in Wiltshire.
“Some of our strongest
UK placements came from
students educated entirely
within India.”
The Doon School, Dehradun
India’s most internationally recognised boys’ boarding school. CBSE curriculum. Strong emphasis on leadership, debating and creative arts. Alumni include some of India’s most distinguished public figures. Highly competitive entry. Annual cost: approx. ₹8–12 lakhs.
Welham Girls’ School & Welham Boys’ School, Dehradun
Sister schools with outstanding academic reputations and strong alumni placement records. A significant number of Welham graduates each year pursue UK and US universities directly.
Kodaikanal International School, Tamil Nadu
Offers IB Diploma
One of India’s oldest international residential schools, offering the IB Diploma Programme. Students from Kodai regularly gain entry to UK, US and Canadian universities. The school’s diverse, international environment is genuinely different from most Indian schools.
Mahindra United World College, Pune
Offers IB Diploma • Scholarship-Based Entry
One of 18 United World College campuses globally. Entry is almost entirely scholarship-based, making it accessible independent of family financial capacity. IB Diploma. Graduates of UWC campuses are among the most competitive international applicants in the world at top global universities.
Rishi Valley School, Andhra Pradesh
A Krishnamurti Foundation school with a deeply distinctive educational philosophy. CBSE curriculum, very small class sizes. For students who learn best in a reflective, academically unhurried environment. Less known but extremely well-regarded by UK and US admissions offices familiar with its ethos.
Mayo College, Ajmer & Scindia School, Gwalior
Heritage residential schools with strong co-curricular traditions. CBSE curriculum. More traditional in approach than Doon or Rishi Valley; both produce students with exceptional social confidence and leadership profiles.
Bishop Cotton Schools, Shimla & Bangalore
Established hill-station boarding schools with strong academic records and international placement histories. English-medium, ICSE/CBSE curriculum, strong sports and cultural traditions.
International Destinations
Vertex has worked with families placing children in boarding schools across the UK, Singapore, Switzerland, the United States, and beyond. The destination decision is rarely just about the school. It is about the environment, the peer group, and the university pipeline the school delivers into.
United Kingdom
UK boarding schools remain the most sought-after in the world. Eton, Harrow, Rugby, Wellington, Cheltenham Ladies', Roedean, Wycombe Abbey, and Marlborough College each have a pipeline directly into Oxford, Cambridge, and the leading Russell Group universities. Vertex has placed students at several of these institutions, managing the full application from entrance exam preparation to interview coaching.
The A-Level curriculum at a leading UK boarding school is the single strongest preparation for Oxbridge admission. For an Indian family with that ambition, a UK boarding placement in Year 9 or 10 is the most reliable path.
Singapore
Singapore hosts some of the most academically rigorous international schools in Asia. UWCSEA (United World College Southeast Asia) offers the IB Diploma and is consistently ranked among the top international schools globally. Tanglin Trust School, Canadian International School Singapore, and Overseas Family School each offer strong British or International curriculum in a culturally accessible environment for Indian families.
Singapore's position means graduates are well-positioned for both UK/US university applications and NUS/NTU admission, which increasingly attracts Indian families targeting Asia-Pacific career tracks.
Switzerland + Premium International
Institut Le Rosey in Switzerland is widely considered the most exclusive boarding school in the world. For families targeting the very highest level of international residential education, Vertex has worked with premium clients considering Le Rosey, College Beau Soleil, and similar Swiss institutions. Fees, admission requirements, and the profile of the student body are unlike any other category of school.
Vertex has also placed students at leading international schools in Jakarta, including Jakarta International School, where British and American curriculum streams are available and the peer environment is genuinely multinational.
United States
American prep schools, Phillips Exeter, Phillips Andover, Groton, Hotchkiss, Deerfield Academy, and Milton Academy among them, provide a direct pipeline to the Ivy League and top US universities. The Common App essay and extracurricular depth that top US colleges require are built naturally into the prep school experience in ways that are difficult to replicate from India.
For families targeting Harvard, Yale, Princeton, or MIT specifically, a US prep school placement in the early secondary years is among the most effective preparation strategies available.
Boarding school placement requires a very different process from university admission. Entrance exams (CE, ISEB, or SSAT for US schools), houseparent interviews, and school visits are all part of the process. Vertex manages the full application, prepares students for the entry assessment, advises on school selection based on the child's learning profile, and maintains relationships with housemasters and admissions staff at the schools we work with most closely. We work with a small number of boarding school families each year and do so with a level of personal involvement that a large consultancy cannot replicate.
The Vertex Process
We assess your child’s academic performance, co-curricular interests, learning style and personality, not just grades, before recommending any school type or geography. The right school is the one that genuinely fits the child, not the most prestigious name on a list.
We provide a considered shortlist of schools that match the student’s profile across UK and India, with honest context about entry competitiveness, culture and outcomes for students with similar profiles.
For UK schools: Common Entrance coaching, UK curriculum gap analysis, and interview preparation. For Indian schools: school-specific entrance exam practice. We work with experienced tutors in both systems.
UK boarding school interviews are substantive conversations about the student’s academic interests, current events and self-awareness. We prepare each student with mock interviews that mirror the tone and expectations of their target schools.
For every eligible student applying to a UK boarding school, we identify and apply for merit-based scholarships. For Indian schools like Mahindra UWC, the entry process is itself scholarship-driven, and we prepare applications accordingly.
We do not stop at school placement. Students who join UK boarding schools through Vertex continue to receive university guidance throughout their sixth-form years, ensuring that personal statement topics, subject choices and co-curricular decisions are made with university ambitions in mind from the outset.
Speak with a senior Vertex counsellor about boarding school options for your child. We will assess their profile, discuss boarding options across the UK, India, and beyond, and answer every question you have.
